Is it necessary to tear off my existing roof?
Removing the existing roof is always a good idea. Moisture can be trapped in the roof system and create problems for the new roof. Also, the deck and insulation can't be properly inspected without first removing the existing roof.
How is roof slope determined?
The pitch or slope of a roof is described by indicating the amount of vertical rise in 12". For example, a 3/12 pitch will rise 3" vertical for every 12" horizonal, whereas a 6/12 slope will rise 6" in 12".
Am I liable for medical bills if a worker is injured at my residence?
Yes, but not if they have current Workers' Compensation Board coverage. This is an important reason to use an established company. Call the WCB to determine if the company you want to do your roof is covered.
Am I liable if the roofing contractor doesn't pay their bills?
The short answer is yes. Although it doesn't happen as often in re-roofing as in new construction, the supplier of the roofing material does have the right to place a lien against your property for non-payment.
Why should I select an RCABC Member contractor?
Member contractors must have a permanent place of business which includes a sheet metal shop. They must be in business for a minimum of 3 years before becoming members. They must be able to provide bonding and have ticketed tradespeople. In addition, their work and place of business is inspected by RCABC prior to being approved for membership. All of this ensures that you will get a quality job by a company that will be there in the future to address any of your problems.
Why is it important to have ticketed personnel working for the company?
Roofing systems have changed significantly over the last few years with newer, more improved systems coming on the market all the time. Trained, ticketed, personnel will ensure these systems are installed properly so that they will function as intended.
Does it have to be summertime before I can replace my roof?
Most roof systems can be replaced any time of the year providing that the weather at the time of installation is good. Certain types of asphalt shingles require the heat of the sun to seal against wind up lift, and special precautions should be taken when installing these types of roofs in the winter.
