Lyle Nelson • President
| A true roofing professional, Lyle is a third-generation roofer whose skill and experience have been gained not only through training but under the tutelage of his father Russ Nelson who started Russ Nelson Roofing in 1980. As someone who has spent his entire life in the industry, learning the trade "from the ground up" Lyle supplemented his on-roof experience by taking a Roofing Apprenticeship. He graduated at the top of his class and went on to win Top Apprentice in BC and soon afterward, Top Apprentice in Canada. In 1999 this combination of technical knowledge, field experience, and business acumen convinced Lyle to purchase the assets of his father's firm to carry on the business. A diligent supporter of his industry, Lyle is a former president of the RCABC and has served on the board since 2001. He has a passion for quality and believes that ongoing training, quality materials, and first-class equipment must combine to produce a consistent-quality roof. Lyle is also on the board of the Vancouver Island Sheet Metal Contractors Association. He and his wife Chris have two children and reside in Royston, BC, just outside of Courtenay. | ![]() |
Mitch Carr-Hilton • Operations Manager - Residential

Mitch Carr-Hilton was one of Russ Nelson Roofing's first employees, starting in 1980 as a laborer, then getting his trade certification, apprenticeship, and Journeyman ticket by 1984. His vast experience in all aspects of the roofing trade, as well as his commitment to customer service and quality workmanship, made him an ideal candidate to become head of residential estimating and operations. Mitch resides in Courtenay, when not challenging various Island golf courses. He and his wife Nancy have two children. |
Randy Walker • Estimator and Operations Manager - Sheet Metal
| Randy Walker is another long-term employee, having been primarily involved in sheet metal fabrication and installation since starting in 1983. He is a Journeyman sheet metal worker, obtaining his trade certification in 1979. His primary responsibilities center around metal roofing and flashing estimating and crew management. Randy is an avid golfer and fisherman. He and his wife Marg have two children and three grandchildren, and live in Comox. | ![]() |
Rob Curts • Senior Estimator - Commercial

Rob came to Russ Nelson Roofing in August of 1994 after serving his apprenticeship and gaining his Journeyman certification for a large firm in the Lower Mainland. After working in the field for several years in both flat roofing and sheet metal, he moved into the estimating department and is now senior estimator for the commercial division. He is highly conversant in all technical aspects of roofing estimating and is responsible for take-offs, estimating, and material procurement. Rob has two daughters and two rambunctious dogs. He and Sarah reside in Royston. |
Bryan Hignell • Sheet Metal Superintendant, Commercial
| Bryan has worked with Nelson Roofing for over 10 years, starting in the sheet metal side of the business as a labourer and soon gaining his apprenticeship and Journeyman certification. His experience in every aspect of the trade, coupled with his customer service excellence, made him a natural fit as superintendant, which he began in 2007. He has an ingrained commitment to quality and performance that makes him a valuable asset. Bryan has three daughters and lives in Royston. | ![]() |
Steve Hadada • Training & Quality Manager

Steve brings over 30 years of experience in every aspect of the roofing industry to his position as training and quality manager. Steve works extensively in the field to ensure every project is performed to the highest technical standards and inspected to verify compliance. He also focuses on skill development and training for our field personnel, assisting them in their apprenticeship and training regimen. Steve has two children, and he and his wife Dee live in Comox, when not camping near some idyllic lake nearby. |
John Lewis • Estimator and Operations Manager, Residential
| John Lewis has lived in the Comox Valley his entire life and joined our firm in 2006. John has a passion for service excellence that was honed in his many years of retail customer service. John believes in making every project a successful one by ensuring his customers' needs are always dealt with in a professional and timely manner. He is involved in many aspects of community life, and is well known in the farming and ranching community as well as applying his fading skills to Masters basketball. Ward has managed the Powell River branch of Russ Nelson Roofing since its inception in 1997. He is fully conversant in all aspects of all roofing and is a ticketed Journeyman. He excels in customer service and looks after all details of project management for projects on the Sunshine Coast. He resides in Powell River. |
Ian Woodason • Estimator and Superintendant, Residential
| Ian is the newest member of our team, joining us in April of 2008. He brings with him a wealth of experience and talent in the residential roofing market with over 21 years in the roofing industry. Ian will be estimating and coordinating residential projects and is keen to bring his attitude of quality and performance to the Nelson team. He has lived most of his adult life in the Comox Valley. Lynn Dorey • Office Administrator, Comptroller

Lynn has worked for the firm since 1996 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of administration, including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, bonding, and insurance. When not in the office, Lynn alternates her time between her various artistic pursuits and enjoying the great outdoors. She has two sons and resides in Courtenay. |
Michael Danielson • Safety Coordinator
| Michael joined Nelson in 2006, coming out of an extensive background in the oilfield industry, in which he had a particular interest in occupational health and safety. Since joining Nelson, Michael has gained his CSABC certification in Safety Auditing and Claims Management, and also his Level 3 First Aid ticket. He is a qualified St John’s Level 1 Instructor and coordinates all aspects of Nelson’s industry-leading safety program, including orientations, safety training, ongoing inspection, claims management, and Safety Committee. He performs detailed safety inspections on virtually every Nelson project to ensure compliance with WorkSafe BC requirements, as well as with the Nelson Roofing Loss Management program. He and his wife Sarah have two daughters and reside in Campbell River. | ![]() |
Ivan Van Spronsen • Operations Manager

A second-generation roofer, Ivan began in the trade in 1978 and gained his Journeyman qualification soon after. He was involved as a principal in his family business in Dawson Creek, BC until August of 2004, when he left to further his career at Nelson Roofing. With his experience in all aspects of the industry, Ivan oversees all operational issues of the company, including project management, recruitment and training, and occupational health and safety. He is a past president of the RCABC and has been a part of nine committees within the board of RCABC. He is a passionate fisherman, and he and Shari are the proud parents of three grown children. They reside in Comox. |
